But what Bausch & Lomb doesn't want you to know is that fungal keratitis caused by Renu can lead to serious eye damages, up to and including temporary and permanent blindness. What is fungal keratitis?Fungal keratitis is an infection or irritation of the ocular cornea, a dome-shaped clear surface covering the sensitive front of the eye. What causes fungal keratitis? There are several variations of corneal keratitis, which can be caused by various factors such as a Vitamin A deficiency, ocular trauma occurring after a foreign body or object makes its way into the eye, parasites, bacteria, and even fungi. The fungal keratitis found in Bausch & Lomb Renu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution is attributed to the fungus Fusarium. The FDA and CDC have both confirmed that use of Renu with MoistureLoc can cause the fungal infection in the cornea. What are they symptoms of fungal keratitis?Fungal keratitis has several symptoms. These include:
How is fungal keratitis treated?First, patients will be instructed to stop using the Renu with MoistureLoc solution immediately. The standard treatment for the variation of fungal keratitis associated with Renu with MoistureLoc is to use Natamycin 5% eye drops. Another eye drop called Scopolamine 0.25% can be used as well; in addition, oral antifungals are often used. If surgical intervention is required, a corneal transplant may be required. What is a corneal transplant?A corneal transplant or corneal graft is a procedure in which healthy cells replace the diseased cells of an infected cornea. This tissue is generally donated by a deceased donor with no known ocular or other diseases. The transplant is generally performed as an outpatient procedure in a hospital, ophthalmologist's office or outpatient center and is performed under local or general anesthesia. A corneal transplant requires several follow-up appointments, but recovery is generally relatively swift. What is a corneal ulcer?A corneal ulcer is a compromise of the corneal surface which occurs when the cornea is damaged or diseased, as in the case of fungal keratitis. These ulcers can be associated with a break in the corneal epithelium (superficial layer). Ulcers can also consist of an accumulation of fluid or cells along the damaged area. Are generic versions of Renu with MoistureLoc dangerous as well?Unfortunately, generic versions of Renu with MoistureLoc can be as dangerous as the recalled Renu product. What are my legal options if I have suffered Renu side effects? If you have suffered eye injury due to your use of Renu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution, you may be eligible for monetary compensation for your medical problems. Those who still use Renu should discontinue use immediately. You can contact Bausch & Lomb directly for a refund of the solution. More importantly, contact an experienced unsafe products attorney. Your Renu lawyer can help to evaluate your claim, file and litigate your case, and assist you in obtaining monetary damages for lost wages, medical bills, future medical care, pain and suffering, and other causes. |
